The “Breathing Detective” on Your Finger: How Do Smart Rings Detect Sudden Drops in Blood Oxygen Levels at Night?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects nearly 1 billion adults worldwide, 80% of whom remain undiagnosed. Traditional polysomnography requires spending a night in the hospital, whereas smart rings offer a home-based screening solution—capturing apnea events through continuous monitoring of blood oxygen saturation throughout the night.

The smart ring’s built-in infrared and red LEDs measure blood oxygen levels every 2 seconds, generating over 15,000 data points throughout the night. When the algorithm detects a drop in blood oxygen levels of ≥4% within 10 seconds, and such “desaturation events” occur more than 5 times per hour, the ring classifies the user as having “moderate-to-high risk for OSA.” A validation study conducted in collaboration with a top-tier hospital showed that the smart ring’s preliminary screening results had an 87.3% agreement rate with professional PSG equipment, with a sensitivity (correct identification of patients) of 91.2%. In addition to blood oxygen levels, the ring simultaneously records snoring (via the phone’s microphone), heart rate variability, and body movements to generate a comprehensive sleep-breathing report. Users can view data such as “lowest nighttime blood oxygen level” and “number of desaturation events” in the app and share it with their doctors for reference.

Snoring doesn’t mean you’re sleeping soundly—it could be your body’s cry for help.

The Venus Smart Shop smart ring allows you to complete a professional sleep apnea screening right in your own bed, enabling early detection and early intervention.
