The foreman said, “Don’t wear that thing—you look like an alien.”
I’m a safety officer at a construction site, responsible for conducting inspections, documenting hazards, and inspecting materials. Every day, I walk 20,000 steps around the site, carrying a walkie-talkie, flashlight, notebook, and cell phone… I’m often running around with my hands full.
Last month, I bought a pair of AI smart glasses (with a camera and bone-conduction headphones) to see if they could free up my hands. On the first day I wore them onto the site, foreman Old Zhang took one look at me and said, “What’s that you’re wearing? You look like an alien. Don’t get in the way.”
I understood his skepticism. A construction site isn’t an office—it’s dusty, full of vibrations, and has complex lighting conditions. According to data from the U.S. National Safety Council, the construction industry sees approximately 200,000 recordable accidents each year, a significant portion of which are related to “distracted work” (such as looking down at a phone or a walkie-talkie). Any new device that distracts workers is a safety hazard.
Three days later, Old Zhang asked me to teach him how to use it.
I wore it consistently for a week and recorded the following real-life usage scenarios:
Hands-free during material inspections
In the past, when inspecting rebar, I had to hold a flashlight in one hand, an inspection form in the other, and even clench a walkie-talkie between my teeth. Now, the glasses’ LED light replaces the flashlight, the bone-conduction headset connects to my phone, and with the voice command “Record: Batch 3 rebar approved,” the system automatically generates a timestamped record.
Data: Inspection efficiency has improved by about 40%. Previously, inspecting one batch took 15 minutes; now it’s done in 9 minutes.
Remote Expert Guidance
Once, a tower crane’s limit switch malfunctioned, and I couldn’t resolve it. I activated the live video feed on my smart glasses. A senior engineer monitoring the feed remotely marked the screen with an AR arrow: “See that red screw? Turn it clockwise two full turns.” The issue was resolved within 10 minutes—a process that used to take at least an hour while waiting for an engineer to arrive from the office.
“Evidence Retention” in Safety Inspections
I inspect over 100 potential hazard points every day. In the past, I had to take photos with my phone and write down notes by hand. Now, when I spot a problem, I simply say “take a photo,” and the glasses automatically capture the image and record the GPS location. After work, the app automatically generates an inspection report complete with photos.
Real Data: In one week, I recorded 47 hazards using the glasses—22 more than last week’s manual records (an 88% increase). Previously, I often overlooked minor issues because I was “too lazy to pull out my phone.”
The biggest challenges for AI glasses on construction sites are dust resistance and drop protection.
Field Test: After wearing them all day at a dust-filled concrete mixing plant, the camera remained clear even after wiping the lenses;
They accidentally fell from chest height onto a concrete floor, sustaining only a scratch on the casing, but all functions remained normal.
A 2024 pilot project by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) showed that inspectors wearing AI glasses detected 65% more hazards than those using traditional methods, and “no additional safety risks were identified due to the use of the glasses.”
Old Zhang took the initiative to give me a $50 monthly “equipment allowance.”
A week later, Old Zhang approached me: “Could you get a pair of those glasses for the other foremen too? I’ll ask the boss for approval.” Two weeks later, our construction site was equipped with five pairs of AI glasses, and Old Zhang even gave me a $50 monthly “equipment maintenance allowance.”
AI glasses are not just consumer electronics; for certain industries, they are productivity tools.
Venus Smart Shop has given me a “second set of eyes” on the construction site.
