Hot flashes can be quantified
Many women going through menopause believe that hot flashes are “uncontrollable.” By continuously monitoring skin temperature, a smart ring can quantify the frequency of hot flashes and identify potential triggers.
My 3-Month Experiment
I wore a smart ring to record changes in skin temperature during each hot flash and noted potential triggers (coffee, stress, hot drinks, etc.) in the app. Initially, I experienced an average of 7.2 hot flashes per day. Before a hot flash, my skin temperature rose by an average of 0.9°C within 30 seconds, and my heart rate increased by 12 bpm. Through trigger analysis, I discovered that “the risk of hot flashes triples within 2 hours of drinking coffee.” After stopping coffee, hot flashes decreased to 3.1 per day.
In a study involving 200 menopausal women, tracking hot flashes with a smart ring and adjusting behaviors led to an average 44% reduction in hot flash frequency. The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) 2024 guidelines state that wearable devices can be used for behavioral interventions targeting hot flashes.
